How to connect to WiFi on Android

How to connect to secured WiFi on Android

As the name shows, secured WiFi is a wireless network that protected with a password. So, in order to connect to this kind of WiFi network you will need to enter a password to connect to this.

Follow these steps below to connect to a secured WiFi network.

  1. Open settings. To do so, just tap on the “settings” icon.
  2. Tap on Connections, then WiFi.
  3. On some android devices, you will see WiFi directly on the settings list. If so, tap on settings.
  4. Make sure that the WiFi switch button is turned on.
  5. Here you will see all the WiFi networks that your device can detect. Just tap on the WiFi network that you want to connect to. The secured signals will have a lock icon with them.
  6. You will be asked to enter the password for the WiFi network. Type in the WiFi password. (It is case-sensitive)
  7. After entering the correct password, tap on connect.
  8. If the password is correct, you will be connected to the WiFi network.
  9. The WiFi signal icon will be visible at the top of the screen near the battery icon.

Note: If the password that you entered is incorrect then you will not be connected. An error message will display such as “Error – failed to authenticate or authentication failed”. If you run into this then just follow the steps as below.

  1. Long tap (hold down then release) on the WiFi network that you tried to connect to.
  2. Tap on Forget. This will reset the password field to blank and it will allow you to enter the password again.
  3. Now, tap on the WiFi network and enter the correct password.
  4. After entering the correct password, you will be connected to the WiFi network.
  5. Once connected, the WiFi signal icon will be visible at the top of the screen near the battery icon.

How to Connect to WiFi on Android quickly

Here is a shortcut that can connect you to WiFi quicker, without going into the settings. To do this, follow the steps below.

  1. Swipe down from the upper edge of the screen to open up the Android shortcut panel. This is the quick access panel that contains shortcuts to various options like WiFi, flashlight, and Bluetooth, etc..
  2. From there, tap on the WiFi icon to turn it ON. It looks like a WiFi symbol and it fills with color when turned on. If it is already turned on, skip this and move to the next step.
  3. Now, if you have previously connected to a WiFi network at that location then your Android will automatically connect to that network.
  4. But, if you have not previously connected to a WiFi network at that location then you need to select an available wireless network and enter a password.
  5. Long tapping on the WiFi icon in the Android shortcut panel will open the WiFi settings. From this point just follow the steps described above to enter the password.

How to connect to Hidden WiFi on Android

Unfortunately, there are hackers in the world that can potentially bypass wireless security including passwords. Because of this, some people have created “Hidden” wireless networks to add even more security.

Wireless routers can be configured to “hide” a WiFi network. This is done so anyone nearby won’t be able to see the network, even though it is actually there.

Because of this, if you want to connect to a Hidden wireless network you will need to enter in all of the network details manually.

Just follow the steps to connect to a Hidden WiFi network on Android.

  1. Open settings by tapping gear its icon.
  2. Tap on Connections then WiFi. On some devices, you may see WiFi directly in the settings list.
  3. Make sure that the switch is turned on. If not, slide it to turn it on.
  4. Tap on the menu icon, usually three dots or three lines on some android phones.
  5. From the menu, tap on add network or add WiFi network on some devices. You may see + icon instead of these options.
  6. Here, type the name of the network which is known as SSID. You can get it from your network administrator or from the router’s settings.
  7. ow, if the connection provided by the router is not secured you need just to tap on join. But, if it is secured, tap on security.
  8. From the list of security types, select the appropriate security type. Again, you can get this from router settings. After you select a security type.
  9. Enter the password in the password field.
  10. Tap on save or connect.
  11. If you provided details are all correct, your device will connect to the WiFi immediately and you will see the signal bar on the top right corner of the screen near the battery icon. Done!

Connect to WiFi using WPS on Android

WPS stands for WiFi Protected setup and this method uses a hardware button on the router to connect to your android mobile or tablet. Before starting the steps, keep in mind that, this method is relatively insecure and not recommended for the places where you don’t want to give access to your networks. To connect your android mobile to WiFi using WPS, follow the instructions below.

  1. Go to settings by tapping its icon.
  2. Tap on Connections then WiFi. On some devices, you may see WiFi directly in the settings list.
  3. Go to Advanced WiFi settings. On newer versions of Android, you can access it by going to WiFi>WiFi Preferences>Advanced. On older devices, you need to tap on three dots (menu icon) located at the top right corner of the screen, then tap on advanced from the drop-down list.
  4. From advanced WiFi settings, tap on WPS Push Button or WPS Pin Entry, depending on the router requirements.
  5. Now, follow the on-screen instructions and your device will try to connect to the router.
  6. After a successful connection, you will see connected under its network name and signals bars on the top right corner of the screen, near the battery icon.
  7. Tip: Get notified when Open WiFi is available
  8. Airports, libraries, and many public places have been equipped with open WiFi. Android OS has a facility by which you get a notification, whenever it discovers any open WiFi. We would like to teach you how to enable this notification, because, sometimes they help a lot.

Note: There are two methods to connect with the router through WPS. One is the WPS push method, which requires the WPS button on your router to be pressed before trying to connect from mobile. The second method is the WPS PIN method which uses 8 digits pin code to connect with the router through WPS. So, the choice of these two methods depends on the requirement of the router.

  1. Go to settings by tapping its icon.
  2. Tap on Connections then WiFi. On some devices, you may see WiFi directly in the settings list.
  3. Go to Advanced WiFi settings. On newer versions of Android, you can access it by going to WiFi>WiFi Preferences>Advanced. On older devices, you need to tap on three dots (menu icon) located at the top right corner of the screen, then tap on advanced from the drop-down list.
  4. From there, you can toggle the switch saying about Open WiFi notification.

Follow the instructions below to connect to open WiFi on Android.

What is open WiFi?

Open WiFi has no security and no password is set. This enables the devices to connect to it without giving a password.

You do not need to be a master to connect to WiFi because the steps are pretty simple and explained with respective screenshots.

Note: Sometimes, you may not be able to connect to open WiFi. In this case, the WiFi router may have implemented restrictions on it, which does not allow it to connect every device to it. The owner can handle the open WiFi signals by specifying the MAC address of the devices. So, in this case, you need to contact the administrator of the router.

  1. Open settings. Tap on its icon to do so.
  2. Tap on Connections then WiFi. On some devices, you may see WiFi directly in the settings list.
  3. Make sure that the WiFi switch is turned on.
  4. Here, you will see all the WiFi signals, your Android phone is discovering.
  5. Tap on the WiFi signal which you want to connect to.
  6. As the open WiFi does not require a password, so when you will tap on an open WiFi, it will immediately try to connect to it.
  7. When you are connected will see connected under its name and WiFi signals bars at top of your screen near battery percentage.

Done! You have successfully connected to an open WiFi.
